Trying to pick up pieces after the divorce was like trying to pick up shrapnel after a bomb went off. There were too many pieces. How would I know which ones to pick up and which ones to leave behind? Every area needed to be healed. I found that the place inside of me that needed the most healing was my thoughts. I felt deeply betrayed, rejected, worthless, sabotaged, stolen from…My thoughts followed my feelings and played negative messages over and over. “You’re second best. He chose her over you. You’re never going to be the same. It’ll always hurt. It’s hopeless. Just learn to live with it. Adapt to your ‘new’ life…”
When we experience pain, or face any kind of battle, the battle is played out in our minds and spirits. Worry and fear can overtake our thoughts and make us feel afraid or anxious. I needed to be delivered from these thoughts, but I wasn’t sure how to do it. I couldn’t do it on my own. God’s spirit renewed my mind as I turned to His words for comfort. As I spent time in prayer, along with reading the Bible and other helpful books, God renewed my thoughts. My thoughts no longer followed my feelings, but now my feelings were coming in line with my new thoughts. “I am a child of God. He cared for me enough to die for me. He understands betrayal, rejection, being spit on, stolen from, being lied to…He is all powerful and lives inside of me. He will provide everything I need. I am cared for by the most thoughtful, most loving, most generous Lord.” I discovered that the mental discipline of lining up my thoughts with His Word was being established, and that helped me stay focused on what pieces God wanted me to pick up. I was learning that His grace is, indeed sufficient.
I share this with you to tell you to not only go through, but embrace whatever you are facing. Walk on one day at a time. Ask for His direction and listen for Him to answer. He speaks in so many different ways if you can just tune in. Take time to discover how and where you hear Him best. Maybe it’s listening to certain types of music, heading to the coast for a day, making sure you are eating and resting properly, or simply taking a little time in the midst of a busy schedule and asking Him to help you get things right! Our lives are so full of distractions that most times we don’t even hear Him speaking, yet He still speaks. He desires to be your Jehovah, whatever you need whenever you need it.
