Phyllis was beginning to have problems getting in and out of the car. It was not a physical problem. Her brain just would not let her move at times, and I didn’t realize that this was the problem at first. I just thought she was being stubborn.
I must admit that I have never been a very patient person, and I have never liked being late for anything. I have always been very punctual and Phyllis was making me late for work. I found myself yelling at her and pulling on her, and really wanting to hit her, but I resisted the urge.
One day, after picking Phyllis up from the day care center, I had to park quite a distance from our home and garage because they were resurfacing the street and driveways in our area of the complex.
I had a problem with IBS, and when I had to go, I HAD TO GO! When I found a place to park, I went to the passenger side to open the door for Phyllis. She would not get out! I took her legs and lifted them out of the car, but she wouldn’t stand up. I yanked and pulled and yelled to no avail. I had to really GO now. I was hoping none of the neighbors saw this fiasco. I put Phyllis’ legs back into the car, took the keys out and locked the doors, and went as quickly as I possibly could, through the grassy areas, into my patio and then into the front door.
I was praying all the way that the good Lord would let me make it to the toilet. “Whew! I made it! My attention turned back to Phyllis, and I was hoping that she was still in the car. She was, and when I opened her door, she just hopped out as if there had been no problem.

Betty L. (Hill) Scott has a Master of Arts in Professional Pastoral Counseling, and is a licensed clinical pastoral counselor. She is also a certified temperament therapist and an ordained minister in the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana). Betty is the founder of Living Waters (counseling) Ministries in Columbus, Ohio. She is a published author and composer of music, the stepmother of two sons, and has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Betty is a retired case manager from the County Office on Aging, in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
