Dee saw what happened next, but it was so fast, it was almost a blur in her mind. The dog jumped at Favor with a terrible growl. In one smooth motion: Favor brought his hands from behind his back, he was holding his father’s baseball bat; he positioned his body into a batting stance; and he swung the bat, striking the dog in the head as it came down from its leap. The dog let out a small yelp and fell dead at the boy’s feet.
Dee heard an awful, cracking sound when Favor struck the dog. He was standing over it, with the bat raised to strike again. Then, he lowered the bat. He looked over to his mother. She saw the tears forming in his eyes. “I couldn’t let the dog hurt you Momma, I just couldn’t!” Dee rushed to her son, grabbed him in her arms and hugged him with all her strength. She held him for a long while before she looked him in the eyes and said, “I thank Almighty God for you, son.”
Walter walked up to Dee and Favor and hugged both of them. “Dee, I’m so sorry. When I heard you calling, I jumped up and reached for my pants and shoes. I got down stairs as fast as I could but I was too late. When I opened the storm door I saw Favor hit that dog with my old bat. I am so sorry I did not come sooner.” Walter was shaking. Dee knew it took a lot to scare her husband. “Walter, it’s alright. Look at us. We’re alright.” She gave Walter a reassuring smile and a hug. Turning again to their son, Dee asked, “Favor, weren’t you afraid of that big dog?” In a tone that was simply matter-of-fact, Favor answered, “No Momma. I wasn’t afraid. You told me that God wants us to trust Him and never be afraid.” Dee and Walter looked at each other with amazement. “When I saw you were in trouble, Momma, I thought about what King David would do. Then I asked Jesus to help me fight for you and I ran and got Daddy’s baseball bat.” Walter said, Son, I am so proud of you. You probably saved your Mother’s life.” Walter hugged his son again. Then he went inside and called the county animal control office.
