“One of the ladies at the church was hosting a birthday party for her granddaughter. It was a typical grandparent hosted birthday party. They had all of the family there; parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts and so on. And you know there was plenty of ice cream, cake, balloons, a clown, petting zoo and oh yeah, the horses. The typical grandparent hosted birthday party always goes overboard. Brady, two going on three, was invited to attend this gala event. Brady’s grandmother told him there were going to be horses coming later on. This news really excited Brady. Shortly after the festivities got under way a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer drove up to the house. Someone alerted Brady of the arrival. When he looked and saw the horses being taken out of the trailer, he began shouting for joy, “The hussies are here, the hussies are here.” To which his grandmother along with everyone else laughed in their amusement and through their embarrassment. Their reaction was predictable because the word Brady used for horses (hussies) meant something entirely different from what everyone else knew it to mean. They turned a brighter shade of red when he shouted with great anticipation, “We ride the hussies! We ride the hussies!” Even now some of you are blushing. Why is that? We blush because we understand the meaning of words. Brady’s childhood innocence spared him from what the grown-ups blushed at.”
