One day when I was at home, a friend came to visit me. I told him that I was frustrated because people around me wanted to see me walking, and obviously I desired that more than they did. But for me in the everyday routine, that desire meant a lot of work that others did not see or understand. He said to me, “Well, I do not want you to walk.”
I could not believe what he had just said. I thought it was a joke. I was very surprised, and at the same time, very saddened. I was repeating his words in my mind and did not have time to answer, because he suddenly added, “I want you to fly.” He surprised me even more, but I knew what he was talking about. I felt relieved, because at least one person close to me was not expecting me to walk; instead, it was something more complicated. In other words, he was sure that I could walk, and at the same time, he challenged me to do something even better: fly.
When I left home on October 19, 2009, I was driving my own car; now, coming home, I was in a wheelchair, and I requiredhelp in accomplishing even the simplest tasks. I needed a full-time nurse, as well as many other people who provided help in many ways. This hectic environment doesn’t seem like rest, but it was, because in my mind there was rest—a strong thought that God is under control.
“One should rather keep a home than an engagement” I heard.
I showed my fiancé the engagement ring in my hand and told him, “I don’t want to wear this ring as another jewelry piece. It is causing a lot of pain.”
I then took it off my finger and handed it back to him. He immediately put it in his pants pocket with a small cry. There was no yelling nor profound weeping, just a sad environment. Then he walked out and also from my heart and my life forever.
