My Daddy said that he found his baby in the Five & Dime
Mother worked as a sales lady at the Five & Dime Store and Daddy came by with Mother’s cousin. He was dashing, wearing a white hat and swept Mother off her feet. He told her cousin that he was going to marry that girl someday. Once when Mother was critically ill, she asked me if she was going to die. I told her if she did, Daddy would be waiting for her. She said the most romantic thing as she smiled, “Your Daddy had the softest sweetest lips”. Thus the title of my book: “Sweet Soft Kisses from Above”. I hope you enjoy Our book that has my Daddy’s paintings, my Mother’s poems, along with devotionals and memories which I wrote.
When you are growing up you are not aware that your parents have talents and abilities. We knew Daddy had many artistic talents as he used them in making a living at Broome Sign Company which he started in 1927. Mother blessed us with beautiful handmade clothes at Easter and many during the year. Being the first Valedictorian of Mount Pleasant High School Class of 1930 Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, she became our dictionary. (Believe me, Broome Sign Co. depended on her abilities). Daddy had patience and I was fortunate to have followed him at Broome Sign Co. from 1968—2007. The company is still operating today by Daddy’s grandchildren, my son, Tom Blackwelder and my nephew, Lennie Turner. They employ Daddy’s grandaughter, Lori Turner Holshouser, and 2 of Daddy’s great-grandchildren, Austin Blankenship and Ryan Blackwelder. Mother blessed me by managing Noah’s Ark Christian Bookstore in Concord, North Carolina from 1975 -1986 along with my daughter, Debbie Blackwelder Bridgeman. We closed the bookstore in 2003 when I retired. Debbie continues running Debbie’s Baskets which we had run out of the bookstore and teaches autistic children at Weddington Hills Elementary, Concord, NC.
In this book I hope I have succeeded in showing their great talents.
