They’re taking him away to be killed. Does he know his peril? I think he must know. He might just know everything. What was that he was saying about praying and his Father would send 12 legions of angels? I think he could actually do that. But he won’t do it. This was all going to happen. Just like Caiaphas said. I can’t move. But I must move. I must go and see what they do to him. They can’t do a thing to him, not to him, not unless he allows it, not unless it is in his plan as well. My feet begin their stumbling course back down the track toward the city. I see the man they call Peter out ahead of me, and another disciple following more closely behind Jesus and the soldiers. With which party am I traveling now? The arrest team or Jesus’ disciples? I was the slave of the high priest, but have I become the servant of the man about to die? I touch my right ear again. It’s the same as ever, but for one thing. As a sign that marked me a slave of Caiaphas, I’d had a large gold ring pierced through that ear. It’s gone. About the Author
Peter Hansen, an Anglican priest since 1985, has presented first-person accounts of Christ’s crucifixion during Good Friday services for over thirty years. He and his wife of forty years have a son and four grandchildren. Hansen also writes and performs music.
