Long ago, there was a large family of donkeys that lived in Nazareth, a town in Galilee of Judea. They were owned by a kind Jewish family who loved God.
In this family of donkeys, there was a father and mother and eight brothers. The youngest of the brothers was named Hee Haw.
Hee Haw was special. He loved to work! He worked happily, and he worked hard. He worked harder than all his brothers, even though he was the youngest and the smallest! But size wasn’t the only physical difference between Hee Haw and the other donkeys. He had the same gray coat that some of his older brothers had, but instead of the slightly darker shade of hair for his mane and tail, Hee Haw’s was blonde! In fact, his brothers made fun of him and called him “Goldilocks!” But Hee Haw was always good-natured, and he just laughed along. Truthfully, the unruly tuft of golden hair flopping down in his face from between his big ears made him look adorable!
The oldest brother of this Jewish family, who owned the donkeys, was named Joseph. He was a carpenter. He also took care of the work animals. Joseph noticed that Hee Haw was a special donkey. Many times, he chose Hee Haw to help him with the jobs that had to be done. Joseph even took the little donkey along when there was no work to do, just because he enjoyed his company so!

About the Book
This is the story born of a song that Dolly wrote years ago for her children’s choir, as a substitute for “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It’s the tale of an adorable little donkey named Yeehaw who is chosen to carry Mary into Bethlehem to deliver baby Jesus. He gets to witness the birth and life of the Savior of the world. Yeehaw’s grandson, Prancer, is chosen to carry King Jesus in his triumphant entry into Jerusalem before the crucifixion. Yeehaw and his family then celebrate the resurrection of Christ and the promise of his return. This story of Yeehaw and various other hoofed animals is interwoven with actual biblical events, making it a great teaching tool for parents and Sunday school teachers and a book to treasure for life.
About the Author
Dolly Cowan is passionate about Jesus, who is behind her childlike imagination and creative writing. Besides being a Bible study teacher and the song leader of her church, she is a devoted wife and mother of five. Dolly lives in a small town in the Texas Panhandle.
The illustrations of Yeehaw and his friends were drawn by Dolly’s son, Ren Malone. He is an artist and cartoonist who, Dolly says, was drawing pictures before he could write his name. As an eleven-year-old, Ren was further inspired when his grandmother took him to meet and get a personalized, autographed cartoon by Bil Keane, the famed cartoonist behind Family Circus.
