Dearal L. Jordan is a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, licensed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and ordained to lead God’s people. He has more than twenty years of pastoral experience and currently is pursuing his Master of Divinity at North Park Theological Seminary.

Unlike some writers, he is successful with delivering just what he promised. Waiting takes a look at a passage of scripture that is often quoted; unfortunately, it?s also often taken out of context.

Most people use Jeremiah 29:11 to encourage people who are approaching a time of transition in life, usually a graduating student. This verse assures us that God has good things in store for us, and that?s encouraging. However, a reading of the surrounding verses makes the promise even more impactful. If you are unfamiliar with this text, it addresses the children of Israel who have been captured and are now exiled in Babylon. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God sends a message of hope to the people; but not the kind of message you would expect to be delivered to a group in their situation. Instead of telling them that He will soon deliver them, God tells them that they will be exiled for seventy years. He then instructs them to do things like: build homes, plant gardens, marry off their sons and daughters and seek the peace and prosperity of the city where they reside with their enemies. In a nutshell, God is telling the Israelites to settle down and ?bloom where you are planted.?

As he unpacks Jeremiah 29:4-11, Jordan uses his personal experiences to provide practical steps for the believer who may be caught between a rock and a hard place. He writes in a comfortable, conversational tone that puts the reader at ease. This is no surprise considering the fact that he is the director of Pastoral Care at one of the largest churches in Illinois.
