Granny Puckerlips

“Being different can make someone feel uncomfortable, or out of place. Does anyone have an example to share about someone who is different?” Granny asked.

Hanna’s hand shot up first. She waited until Granny called on her. “Yes, Hanna,” she said.

“Well, we sometimes see homie guys walking around with their pants falling off so you can see their underwear. Some even wear lots of underwear that pooches up like my cousins used to wear. Sometimes they have to hold their pants up so they don’t fall off when they walk too. And some homies have their pants so low they don’t even cover their...”

“Thank you Hanna,” Granny cut her off just in time. “Does that make you feel uncomfortable, Hanna?”

“When I see their bobo it does,” Hanna said.

“By bobo, do you mean their bottom, or underwear?” Grandpa asked.

“Yes, Grandpa. That’s what I mean. That’s the nice word for butt, but I’m not to use that word,” Hanna replied. Grandpa let her know that butt was a course word and bobo was much nicer.

“What do you do when you see kids like that?” Grandpa asked.

“I point them out to my dad and we all laugh at how weird it is for someone think their pants falling off looks cool,” Hanna responded.

“I saw a kid wearing his pants so low they were around his knees,” Peter said. “His shirt looked like he wore a dress.”

“That’s pretty different when we see something like that. It usually makes me a little uneasy to see something different than what I’m used to,” Grandpa said.

Granny told us how she grew up in a home with parents who did not use course language or slang words. She grew up in a proper home where she’d get in trouble for dressing odd or talking in slang words.

“Granny, I’m sorry you had a hard childhood and had to be fancy all the time,” Hanna told her. “You could come live at our house if you want so you can loosen up a bit.”

Granny thanked her for being such a fine young lady.
