The Kuntz family was invited to visit the palace where Rudolph’s sister Anne lived in Saxony. She was married to Baron Elbenburg. Twelve-year-old Katherine Kuntz was impressed by the elegance and beauty of the palace. During their visit Katherine noticed her uncle talking to her father and glancing at her. She wondered if they were talking about her. On their return journey by boat she heard her father mention her name. Pretending to be asleep she listened to her parents’ conversation.
“They are desperate to have an heir,” her father said. “They would like to have Katherine come and live with them. Think of the wealth that would be hers—and maybe ours—if that happened.”
Her mother’s reply was not in her usual calm voice. “That will never happen as long as I’m alive. I could never give up my daughter. Do they think they can buy her from us?”

About the Book

About the Author
Alberta Sparks is a pastor’s wife. She wrote Sunday school curricula for children for eleven years and for twenty years was an associate editor for the Wesleyan Advocate. She wrote a series of missionary biographies for children, two fiction books for children, a history of her denomination’s orphanage, and a Christian romance novel.
