One of the great mysteries of the New Testament is that it is veiled in the confusion of paradox. As we read the scriptures, we can easily become perplexed. We are perplexed because that which, by all appearances, appears to be false, turns out to be true, and that which is true, reveals itself as false. We don’t have to go far into the Bible to encounter this strange truth. For example, when Jesus was hung on the cross on the fateful afternoon we call Good Friday, he was thought to be cursed. He was cursed by the very words that originated from His father. In the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 21:23, it is clearly pronounced that all who are hung on a tree are cursed! Consequently, all Orthodox Jews of his day could not possibly consider him the Messiah. The cross could not be an instrument of blessing! God, through his Word, had already declared the verdict. Yet, it is through this “curse” that humankind was redeemed and restored in the Kingdom and were able to re-established a living relationship with God our Father.

About the Author
Lawrence Perry shares his personal insights after serving twenty-six years in parish ministry. Adding to his credits is his experience working with the recovering community in alcohol rehabilitation. He has also lectured and led workshops on codependency. Having served with the Air Force in Vietnam, Perry has great compassion for those who continue to serve their country. Currently, Perry lives in Colorado with his wife, Margretta, and their dog, Emily. Though retired from ministry, he continues his outreach through his writing, volunteering, and life coach practice.
