“And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.” Malachi 2:15 Men and brethren, as we begin an in-depth study into what God has written in His Word concerning our families and our holy calling as fathers, let us humbly petition our Father, the God of Heaven and Earth, to help us glimpse into His own heart and see the vision that He has for us and for our families. We must come to God with an earnest desire to see beyond our own limitations into the realm of the eternal. Only by God’s grace can we hope to see our calling as fathers from God’s point of view. But that is the perspective we must have if we hope to fulfill the call that God has placed upon our lives. The Scripture quoted above gives us a glimpse into where this study will take us. For some, this study of our holy calling will be a new revelation. For others, it will bring an often needed reminder of the truths we hold dear to our hearts. For still more, it will sound a clarion call for repentance and a return to God’s perfect plan. In whatever condition God’s Spirit finds us as we consider His Word, let us embrace the Scriptures and welcome the searching, slicing, scouring work that only the unadulterated Word of God can do in our hearts and minds. Let us ask with Malachi, why did God make me one with my wife in holy marriage? As true now as then, there is one overriding answer—that God might seek a Godly seed in the earth. This is the holy purpose of our marriage and the great duty to which God calls us the moment we first hold our firstborn in our arms. Let us then search the Scriptures and ask God to fully reveal to us His heart for Godly seed. And then, let us petition Heaven for the vision necessary to bring our hearts into agreement with God’s, so that we, in one holy unity between God and man, may together seek a Godly seed.

About the Author
Andrew Finnicum was born and raised in a Christian home. After being homeschooled from K–12, Andrew attended Liberty University. The day after his graduation, he married his high-school sweetheart, Ashley, and they began their new life together. Andrew graduated from the Washington & Lee University School of Law in May 2010.
While attending law school, Andrew and Ashley were blessed with Silas (2008) and Shiloh (2010). With a growing family, Andrew commenced an in-depth study of the scriptural call of fatherhood. The Calling of Fatherhood is the fruit of that search.
Andrew and Ashley currently live in Salem, Virginia, with their three young children (and counting).
