I woke abruptly and in the foggy time between waking and sleeping, I reached out my arm wanting to feel Jack next to me. His side of the bed was still empty. I plumped my pillow and tried to get comfortable again. Why haven't I heard from him? In my heart I knew something terrible had happened. I sat up and listened intently as I had on numerous other nights at this ungodly hour and couldn't account for anything that could have awakened me, as usual. I never slept soundly when Jack was flying on business and I was alone.
