Mary Alice blamed herself for their present mess. She was the oldest. She knew better, but her little brother had whined and begged until she finally agreed. Here they were again. She had told Billy Russell there were situations in life from which you might escape only once. They had already cheated fate more than they should have dared. He had not learned anything. And, here she was, trying to save him from certain death at the hands of someone they were yet to meet.
She knew she should not breathe. The sound would give the enemy her location, exactly three feet, squarely behind him — so very close. In the fast approaching cover of night, even with the storm crashing around them, he would surely hear her. She was in agony. She needed to scream, to somehow warn her brother of what was imminent. Where had the plan gone wrong? How had they gotten to this point?
She instantly made a mental note for the next time he started begging her. Who was she kidding? There would be no next time. They were not getting out of this one!
