The Creator—The Chief Who Spoke for the Children

Writing this book was a trip through my memories that brought me back to a time, a place, a destination, and a plan from the Creator.

Who was I to begin a journey into the world of the Native American community? Did I know? Did I want to know? With the Holy Spirit to guide me, I began the journey with a prayer to always be true to the Creator and to never bend or bow.

My life changed in 1984 when I was hired by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians to be the Superintendent of Schools. How I got to that position was divinely inspired. I had just been laid off from White River Schools as a Physical Education Coordinator because of lack of enrollment.

I had spent 14 years working with severely handicapped institutionalized students aged 6 through 21. I loved the job. I loved the students. I loved the institution, and all the staff who worked so hard to make their lives better.

My students were severely handicapped; they did not know vulgarity, or hatred. They only knew the love I could give unconditionally in return for the unending amount of joy and happiness they gave me.

While I was seeking other employment, a fellow instructor at Rainier School told me about a job opening at Chief Leschi, and encouraged me to apply. I had furthered my Education and received my Principal’s credentials, so was looking for a job in a High School. Not knowing anything about Chief Leschi School I ignored the request.

I applied to a High School in Steilacoom as a Vice Principal and I interviewed. However, because my colleague kept calling and asking me to please apply at Chief Leschi, I finally agreed.
