At this point everything was fresh and new for me. I felt as though my life was really about to start and that my situation would be different now. Just how different was anybody’s guess. Superstition is a way of life for many people in the mountain communities of northwestern North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. When superstition is blended with Christianity, a hybrid faith emerges that leaves the worshipper without a steady footing for the problems of life. Hybrid Christianity is not only a part of mountain communities; it is also a way of life for many Christians in areas where superstition may not be as noticeable.

About the Author
LONNIE DENNEY is the pastor of Nelson Chapel Baptist Church. He is also the president and a teaching professor at Watauga Baptist Bible College. Lonnie currently lives in Mountain City, Tennessee, with his wife, Tina. They have one son, Benjamin; he and his wife, Cortney, also reside in Mountain City.
