We crawl into bed exhausted and sleepy. As we reach to turn out the light we see the Bible sitting reproachfully on the night table. Luckily, we know how to get rid of the guilt that just jumped into bed with us. Psalm 134 or 150—one of the short ones—will do. Or maybe even a whole chapter of Proverbs, especially if we missed yesterday’s reading.
I’ll bet there are more than a few of us would-be followers of Jesus who recognize that scene.
There’s definitely nothing wrong—in fact there’s everything right—with wanting to have a daily Bible reading. But when did reading the Bible become one of our daily chores, something we have to do in order to feel as if we have accomplished all we need to do before putting head to pillow? When did it become just another demand for our time in an already crowded life?
It’s not supposed to be that way. You know it; I know it; all God’s children know it.
And God knows it.

About the Author
Fay Rowe has shared powerful insights with people of all ages as a teacher of fourth graders and junior high students, and in settings such as Sunday morning church services, Wednesday night Bible studies, and various Women’s Club and conference events. An award-winning author of three books, Fay believes that “although truth may reach the mind by casual hearing, it doesn’t settle into the heart and become functional and fruitful without personal engagement.”
