Once upon a time, not so very long ago, in a big old country farmhouse, not so very far from here, there lived a little old farmer and his wife. Now, no one really knew their names, but it didn’t really matter. They were so jolly and so grand that everyone just called them Grandpa and Grandma. Folks often liked to stop by for a visit, because Grandpa and Grandma always had time to listen to their stories, and there were always fresh-baked cookies in Grandma’s cupboard, just waiting for company to drop in. But their children lived far away and their grandchildren were growing up, and they had become much too busy to spend a few days visiting and sleeping on the ‘Magic Bed.’ They were too big to have tea parties, or to cuddle up next to Grandma to listen to her stories. Too big to go fishin’ in the ditch with Grandpa, or go posie-pickin’ in the woods. So Grandpa tended his garden, fed the kittens, and read the newspaper, while Grandma cooked the soup, did the wash, and clicked her knitting needles. But still sometimes Grandpa and Grandma would get very bored and very, very lonely.

Their children lived far away and their grandchildren were growing up, so sometimes the elderly couple became very bored and very lonely.
But one day, they started thinking about Christmas and how exciting it would be to have the whole family home again. Grandma wanted to make a very special memory for the entire family, so she created a plan that involved using many different colors of yarn. Just before the holiday, Grandma and Grandpa prepared the surprise, and they could hardly wait for the family to arrive.
Based on a true story that took place at the home of Waneta Cotner Worstine’s parents in 1988, Grandma’s Yarn shares the importance of creating strong family relationships and wonderful memories. Through yarn illustrations and words, it celebrates the simple joys of being a family.
What a wonderful gift to all! Nita not only shared a beautiful memory, but allowed her readers to go back and recall one of their own treasured memories as well. And with her beautiful story came thoughts of how we all could create such blessings for our families.

Waneta Cotner Worstine is a retired teacher who taught children with special needs. She and her husband, Ray, have three married children and eight grandchildren. They live near Arlington, Ohio, where Nita was born and raised.
