Genesis 1:20-25 describes six different kinds of animals, all belonging to the same classification of Mammals and Birds. On the sixth Day one more creature in this classification was added, man himself, bringing the total to seven. These were the Magnificent Seven that most demonstrated the nature of God in our universe, and which symbolized the perfection of creation with the number seven.
Genesis informed Moses and the nation of Israel that God alone created these animals that they had both seen and heard about. They were not the result of some pagan pantheon of gods. Although God had also created all extinct species, they should not be considered part of the creation narrative since they were no longer observable in nature. There would have been little point if Genesis included extinct animals that would have had no meaning to Moses and the Israelites. All of the animals described in Genesis are extant species of Mammals and Birds (at the time Genesis was written), most of which still populate the earth.

Meanwhile in the Fertile Crescent, glacial dams had collapsed at the time of the comet, emptying glacial lakes from the surrounding mountains into the land locked basin, which mankind certainly occupied. The Fertile Crescent would have been totally flooded to a depth of as much as 1,300 feet above the sea level that existed at that time. At the end of the Flood, God caused a wind to blow, breaking the partially consolidated sand dunes to the south, and the flood water drained into the Arabian Sea, as described earlier in this chapter.

After the Beginning offers compelling insight about God’s purpose for an eternal loving relationship with mankind that was made in His image. This theme is revealed in Genesis with the creation of Adam and Eve, with the animals named by Adam, and with the animals that were saved on the ark. From creation through the Flood, Dr. Edridge concludes that the creatures described in Genesis had emotional capability, such as mammals and birds. Further consideration of species that should be included in the creation narrative leads to agreement between the biblical sequence of creation and the scientific chronology of the fossil record and the early stages of the Earth’s development.
Dr. Edridge examines different flood models to determine if they are consistent with biblical parameters and scientific scrutiny. Based on documented flood records and geological events, he proposes a new catastrophic Flood Model that meets both qualitative and quantitative requirements for the most likely flooded area, the cradle of civilization. This model is unique, providing a viable mechanism that caused the Flood to subside, but which agrees with the biblical description.
About the Author
Dr. Anthony Edridge earned his B.Sc. from the University of Southampton and his Ph.D. from the University of Surrey in England. He gained a Christian Leaders degree from Hill Country Bible College in Texas and served as an elder in three evangelical churches during the last forty years.
