I slowly crept up to the boulder, being ever so quiet so that I wouldn't alert the bandits. I eased around and was just approaching the last unexplored side of the rock when I heard the strangest hissing and rattling noise. All four of my feet froze to the hot sand. I slowly turned my head and there, smack dab in front of me was the biggest, meanest-looking dessert rattlesnake that I had ever seen. He was coiled around in circles with his head lifed up and his tongue slithering in and out of his mouth. The end of his tail was lifed up in the air and it shook and rattled louder and louder until I thought for sure my ears would burst. His eyes were unblinking slits that sent cold shivers down my spine in spite of the scorching heat. We stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity. I knew that if I moved he would strike and my life would be over.

About the Book
Rosita, The Journey Home tells the story of how a tiny Chihuahua, born in Mexico, was rescued by a missionary and how she came to live in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. She longed for two things: a name that belonged only to her and a family to love and care for her. Along the way she faced permanent separation from her native home and family, loneliness, fear, and an encounter with danger in the desert. She was also introduced to an invisible, wonderful friend named God.
About the Author
Fran Flowers is a native of the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. She graduated from Western Carolina University with a master’s degree in business. She taught accounting and finance at the community college level and has co-owned and operated a small construction company.
Fran is an active member in her church where she has taught the children for many years. She lives in southwestern North Carolina with her husband, Bill, and, of course, Rosita.
