When the tour ended the boat docked and we climbed the ramp. Jeff led me through the streets to an Italian restaurant tucked into the corner of a building. It was sectioned off into quaint, but dark rooms, lit only by the candles on the tables.
“I guess we won’t notice if we get a hair in our salad,” I said as my eyes adjusted. “I wouldn’t have had to wear makeup.”
“You didn’t need to put makeup on anyway. I usually see you without it.”
“That’s something I’ve never had a guy tell me.”
“You don’t wear much anyway,” Jeff continued. “Makeup I mean. Unless we’re skinny dipping, and then you weren’t wearing…well anything.”
“I’m remorseful about that,” I said.
“As you should be.”
“You never saw anything did you?”
“What?”
“When we were skinny dipping. I never looked at you or Carol. Did you look at me?”
“Um.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“I’m a guy, Meghan.”
“What did you see?” I demanded.
Our waitress approached the table.
“Can I get you something to drink?” she asked.
Jeff looked at me.
“Chocolate milk,” I said.
“I’ll have a beer, whatever’s on tap,” he said.
The waitress left.
“Front or back?” I insisted.
“Chocolate milk?”
“It’s my favorite drink.”
“Well, this date is just full of firsts, isn’t it?”
“You’ve never been with a date who’s ordered chocolate milk?”
“I don’t know. Maybe in third grade.”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“What question?”
“Front or back?” I demanded.
“You mean skinny dipping?”
“You know what I mean.”
“Side.”
“Profile?”
“Yeah.”
“When?”
“On the beach when we were getting dressed. I just happened to look in your direction as you put your shirt on.”
“Wasn’t it dark?”
“Of course it was dark.”
“Then how did you see anything?”
“It must have been because you had the lights of the city behind you.”
“I feel like I’ve been raped.”
Jeff lowered his voice. “Don’t even joke about that.”
“You broke a trust.”
“I glanced over to make sure you weren’t being attacked.”
“If that isn’t the lamest excuse I’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.”
The waitress came with our drinks. She checked Jeff’s ID then took our order.
“Don’t be mad,” Jeff said, when she left.
“I didn’t look at you,” I said.
“Of course you didn’t. You didn’t know I existed until yesterday.”
“Still, that’s not fair.”
“Well, I’ll tell you what. I’ll make it fair. When we leave here we can go somewhere and I’ll take off my pants.”
“Ha. Ha.”
“I’m serious. I don’t want to have an unfair advantage.”

About the Book
