The motel room was dark, although the sun was well past rising. Jane squinted her eyes, trying to remember where she was. I'm somewhere I've got no business being, she recalled. How foolish to think I could come back and face the ghosts of my past. "How stupid can I be?" she muttered under her breath. Jake stirred, yawning noisily, "Morning sugar, is it time to get some breakfast yet? It's hard to tell with these heavy drapes. I don't know why we need them way out here in the boondocks anyway, there's nobody around to peep in the windows." "Don't forget PSYCHO," Jane replied, shivering. "Ha, ha! I don't see how you can suspect kindly old Mr. Tucker of devious motives," he laughed while rolling out of bed. "You've got some more wild imagination! You're not really suspicious of him, are you?" "Of course not, don't be ridiculous, but things do happen, you know! The newspapers are full of wicked things every day. You never know what goes on in other people's minds. That's all I'm saying, for goodness sake!"

About the Book
Joy Comes in the Mourning is the story of one woman's journey toward forgiveness—hers, as well as others. It is a love story and a story of hatred. It has a dark element of bitterness and fear running throughout, but also a healthy dose of humor. Jane Houston, an RN who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, was raised by relatives after her parents died in an accident. She suffers from depression and bitterness brought about by abuse and sin. As she contrives to help herself, she comes face to face with her fears and her need of a Savior. A brief vacation visit to her former home in Mount Tarry, a small mountain town in North Carolina, turns into a long one, and she becomes involved with many different characters as her life winds and turns, much like Mount Tarry's narrow roads. She has plans for herself and her husband, Jake, but she'll find out that plans can be divinely interrupted.
About the Author
Kay Helms Pethel has been writing poetry, songs, and short stories for many years. It's the pure joy she receives from expressing her love of Jesus Christ, and her deep faith in God, that feeds her desire to write.
Kay makes her home in Kannapolis, North Carolina. She is a member of Landis Baptist Church, where she has been privileged to serve in different areas of speaking and teaching. She is a widow who shares her home with her mother, Emma. She is the mother of four children, Eva, Martha, Tammy, and Darvin, and has four grandchildren, Talitha, Tenille, Adam, and Chase.
