Chapter 1- A Cry in the Woods.
“Help!” The cry pierced through the quiet of the forest that I had been lost in for the past three hours.
“Who are you and where are you?” I asked the crying voice. I heard a scream and another cry for help. I rode in the direction of the voice.
“Keep crying” I thought to myself.
“Help” I heard “Help, Help!”
I finally found the person behind the voice, a beautiful young girl, who looked to be not much younger than I. Her hair was brown and wavy, her eyes, wide with fear, were an enchanting blue, every thing about her was lovely. I was hypnotized by her beauty for a few seconds before I realized that she was stuck in the middle of a small marsh and sinking fast.
“Help me please.” She said.
“Yes, you do seem to be in a predicament.” I replied.
I removed my cloak and waded in and she clung to me for life because she was up to her shoulders in the mire, though somehow she managed to keep her arms free. After a few minutes of struggle we both were out of the marsh. I gave her my cloak because hers was wet and soiled from the mud.
“Thank you Sir...” She paused waiting for my name.
“Weston, Sir Weston, and you are?” I asked.
“Lily.”
“Your welcome then, Lady Lily.”
“Oh, it's just Lily.” She interrupted.
“Alright then Lily, what were you doing if I may ask?”
“Oh you may, I was going for a walk in this part of the forest and I got lost, then he appeared and started chasing me, I ran as fast as I could in this dress.”
Her dress was simple, red and had it not been torn and dirty from her run and the marsh I would have thought her to be a princess or least a lady.
“I lost him after a while and found myself stuck in that marsh, so I began to cry for help I was only crying for about one minute when you came and you know the rest.”
“Indeed.” I replied. “Who was it that was chasing you... Lily.?”
She had gone completely pale and had frozen with fear.
“Lily... what's wrong?”
Just then I heard the sound of a sword coming out of its sheath. I spun around, drawing my sword, and found myself face to face with the largest man I had ever seen.
“Step aside.” He bellowed.
“It's him!” Lily shrieked clutching my arm and ducking behind me.
“What is your quarrel with this lady?” I said as boldly as I could.
“My quarrel with this lady is none of your business, step aside or you shall die.” He bellowed.
I looked at Lily and saw the terror in her eyes I knew she would most likely die at the hands of this man and even though I barely knew her name, it was my duty as a knight to do what I could to save her. Then I turned to face my largest foe yet.
“I will not step aside nor will I die.” I took a swordsman's stance and prepared for my biggest fight yet.
He lunged at me and I dodged. Then I began a powerful volley of cuts and slashes but he blocked each one. He began to grow bolder and I found myself in full retreat under the mastery of his sword. Before I knew it I was on the ground, face-up, without my sword. My life was over.
Just before he made his final cut I made one last effort to destroy him and save Lily from whatever her fate would be. I rolled knocking the man off balance and retrieved my sword. He was up again and was angrier than before. His anger would end soon. Faster than lighting I lunged forward burying my sword in his chest; he fell to the ground, dead.
I turned towards Lily, she ran and fell at my feet crying. I reached down and lifted her head. She looked into my eyes and said, “Thank you for saving my life, in the marsh and from him... Christon.”
“So that is his name.” I said.
“Yes… it is.” She answered.
“What was his quarrel with you?” I asked.
“It is much more than a quarrel... much more... but I am afraid I cannot tell you.” She answered.
“I understand.” I replied.
“I would appreciate it if I could travel with you until the end of this forest.” She said after studying me for a few minutes.
I looked at her strangely and finally said “Yes for awhile, will you tell me why?”
“In due time, maybe.” She answered.
She stood there studying me or searching for something inside me. She looked into my eyes with her clear, deep blue eyes. She seemed to hold my eyes up no matter how I wished I could look away, but I didn't want to look away, her eyes were so enchanting.
Finally she looked away and saw my horse.
“What is her name?” She asked walking over to stroke its mane.
“His name is Chester.” I replied.
“Oh! He's a boy and a very good boy.” She said half to me and half to Chester.
“Shall we go?” I said holding out my hand to help her up.
“Yes if you are ready.” She said taking my hand and mounting Chester.
I mounted after her and we rode through the forest.
