A FATHER’S ARM SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11: 29 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” As I watched the 1996 summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, I will forever remember one particular moment. It wasn’t a great victory in the world’s eyes, but it was a beautiful picture of God’s victory in a Christian’s life. As one of the races was taking place, a runner pulled a muscle and began limping. He dropped farther and farther behind, but kept hobbling toward the finish line. In the stands, his father saw what was happening. He knew the heart of his son and his desire to finish his race. Making his way out of the stands and pushing by the officials, he joined his son at the back of the pack of runners. He placed his arm under his son’s to give him the support he needed and together they crossed the finish line. There are many times we as Christians find ourselves in this race we call life, running for all we’re worth. Then suddenly we are faced with a devastating set-back. We can no longer run with the same speed or enthusiasm. The other racers are way ahead and have no time to stop and help, BUT GOD is in the stands watching. Just when you think you can no longer put one foot in front of the other, you feel His arm around you, supporting you and helping you over the finish line. This is the yoke that Jesus presented in Matthew 11. For years, I thought He was just asking more of me than I could handle. I argued that His yoke was hard, not easy, and I just couldn’t keep up. BUT GOD knew how wrong I was and He in His mercy provided an up-to-date picture that I could grasp. As I round the bend for the final lap of my life race, I am so glad that He has His arm around me, supporting me as I head toward the finish line. I do so want to “finish the race He has set before me.” Dear Abba Father, Thank you for teaching us that you have not left us to carry our own burdens or even to run the race alone. Thank you that you are there waiting for just the right moment to come and take up the other half of the yoke and together we will cross the finish line.

Pat Stonestreet and her husband of over forty-five years live just outside of Winchester, Virginia. She has spent most of her life enjoying the But GOD moments of being a mother, grandmother, teacher, and executive director of a pregnancy center.
