It was 1880 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I guess my most memorable Christmas was when I was nine years old.
It was a cold time, 1880 was a cold hard year for me and my sisters.
You see, mom had been dead for six months and we had nowhere to go, but try and stay in that cold basement room.
We knew we must all stick together to survive the times.
My oldest sister, her name was Ella, just fifteen at the time, posed as our mother several times. Back then people would come and place you in state work camps until you got older. But, Ella was never gonna let that happen.
Ella and Lottie worked at the textile mill in New York City. Even though they were only 15 and 12 years old, they needed young women to slide between the looms, bring thread, oil the working looms.
