Eve The love of fruit undid me. Envy and pride grew ripe within me And I was a purple liquid plum, Ready to fall when the beguiling Words first oozed like oil into my ear. Adam couldn’t always be the leader, I thought when the serpent first Approached me. I remember the day like it was just This morning. Cool and warm to The skin like baked Alaska to the tongue, The air wrapped its arms around my Breasts and thighs like the innocent Nuzzling of babes after baths. The urge to taste sweet fruit Sent me to the center of the garden Where golden globes of red and Yellow fruit hung full of promise From the tree only God could have Resisted. Elegant in glistening skin wrapped Around the tree as though a part of It the serpent hissed its Presence to me in whispering Tones of seduction in my ear. “Yes!” I said to his promise of knowledge and plucked the fruit from the laden branch in a glee I had not yet felt. I loved that Fruit and caressed it, rolling it over In my hands, sensing, Feeling its smoothness, Anticipating its succulence, its sweetness dripping Down my chin and lifted it to My waiting lips slowly, lustfully Before I took that first forbidden Bite. Oh, how exquisite was that ecstasy! How could I deny Adam such joy. I searched for him in the Cool of the day and found him Under his favorite tree, meditating With closed eyes and open mouth. I thrust the fruit between his lips and Urged him, “Bite down, it is the Best in the garden and only forbidden To keep us subservient.” He looked At me as though I were not his beauty, As though he didn’t recognize his perfect Eve and Bit into the fruit.
