PRIDE SEEPED IN I prayed for months before the event. I so desired Your Spirit to bless this event and all who were involved. In my nervousness I was capable of missing the blessing myself. As I came to You for confidence and calmness You led me down another path that built my faith, yearning for more of You, hungering to be used by You. When the event came, Your peace Lord, soothed my nervousness and blessed me with the joy around me. You filled me with such calmness, oh I was nervous but it was miniscule in comparison to what I could have felt. It was a healthy nervousness. Then came what I considered the pinnacle of the weekend. The music, the drama, the chapel filled. I was the speaker, with a sermon much prayed over and claimed for You, self began to get in the way. Will I impress them? Will I astound them with my gift of speaking? Would they talk for weeks about the amazing message? Like sin usually does, pride began to seep into God’s well laid plan threatening to tarnish the morning and steal the blessing. God sent out His alert to me and I saw my feelings for what they were. In His forgiveness, I pleaded that it would be all to His glory and move me out of the way. The meeting was amazing and as tears flowed down my face in glorious worship, I was so reminded of Your faithfulness, Your greatness, Your mercy and love. As Your message was delivered through me, eyes and ears were riveted to Your words. People of all ages were listening to what You had to say. It was rich and sweet. Complements flowed and I said little more than thank you, blown away by how You used me. I glowed throughout the day, replayed wonderful words in my mind……….. Then pride seeped in and my heart swelled with how well it went. Pricked by Your Spirit Lord again I prayed to give glory to Who deserved it. I prayed it through and the Lord won out. I had victory and felt good that I had listened to the Lord. Then pride seeped in………. Oh Lord have mercy. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, But with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2

About the Author
As an ordained minister it is not uncommon to look for sermon illustrations in the everyday things. Born and raised in Indiana Cindy Hoag presently resides in a town bordering the Illinois’ state line. She and her husband Gordon are in charge of The Salvation Army’s operation in their community. They have Three children and one grandchild. Writing has always been a passion and sharing God with others is part of her call.
