Why would anyone living in the twenty-first century want to read and study Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians? A casual reading of this letter leaves one with the impression that the only people who could possibly benefit from it would have been those to whom it was written, and the Apostle Paul, who wrote the letter out of great concern for the church’s situation. However, when one reads the letter with an eye for its lessons, the importance of this letter for today can readily be seen. The letter to the Thessalonian believers is filled with hope for the future. These young believers at Thessalonica were literally in a battle for their very lives and continued existence as a church. They needed a message of hope! Without hope there is no life. Hope gives one purpose for living. The twenty-first century poses a threat to the believer’s faith very much like the times of the Thessalonians. People are losing hope every day and committing suicide because their world is falling apart. Finances are collapsing. Families are falling apart. The Christian faith is under attack. Immorality is rampant. The hope that Paul gave the church at Thessalonica is the same hope that believers in the twenty-first century need; it is the hope of a wonderful future at the coming of the Lord Jesus. Dr. Kenneth E. Terry is a native of Patrick County, Virginia, where he now serves the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church as pastor. He received the Th.B. degree from Holmes Bible College, Greenville, SC, the Master of Theological Studies and the Master of Arts in Ministry from Houston Graduate School of Divinity, Houston, TX, and the D. Min. Degree from Carolina Evangelical Divinity School, Greensboro, NC. Dr. Terry has served as professor, pastor, and administrator over the past thirty-five years.
