A Mother’s Advice To Her Child

Hi. My name is Maya. I am supposed to be asleep right now, my mom tucked me in an hour ago, but I have a small problem. I am not sleepy. Would you like to be my new friend and keep me company? We have to be quiet ok?

I am seven years old and I was born on an island in the Caribbean called Trinidad. Trinidad is awesome! We have beautiful beaches in my country, the best Carnival in the world every year, the tastiest food you can eat and friendly, loving people. It is seven miles off the coast of Venezuela. Where are you from?

I have a problem at my school. All the children in my class make fun of a girl called Tricia. She is super shy and kids pick on her all the time.

Mom says, “Maya, if it were you and all the other children bullied you, would you like it?”

I replied, “I guess not.”

My mom answers, “Treat Tricia the same way you would like to be treated. Let her know that you are different from the other children.”

I said, “Sure mom.”

The next day at lunch time, I went over to Tricia and introduced myself and gave her a cupcake I had in my lunch bag. She looked at me and smiled.

I smiled back, and doing that made me happy. My mom’s advice worked! My mom rocks!

Yesterday, Miss Lewis surprised us with a Science test. Science is my weakest subject. I looked at the questions and almost started crying. When Miss Lewis excused herself from the classroom for a moment, all the other children began looking for their textbook to cheat.
