“What do you think that Shane meant when he said that we gotta spend the night?” Brady asked me later that night as we talked over the phone.
I sat at my kitchen table with the twisting and turning yellow phone cord stretched out as far as it would go, making it look like a tight rope across the room. I balanced my bologna and cheese sandwich which dripped in mayonnaise in one hand and the kitchen phone in the other.
“I think that Shane means exactly what he said. You and I are going to have to spend the night at the school.” I said, taking a bite and letting a small piece of the cold thin bologna fall to the floor so our scruffy dog, Oliver, could snap it up.
“But don’t they have like alarms and stuff all over that place?” Brady tried to reason. “I mean the second that we open the doors or even move, the alarms would go off. I saw in this movie once where the whole entire hallway was filed with these bright green lasers, and the lady that was breaking into the place had to bend in all these weird shapes just to get by them.”
“Geez,” I said with a mouth full of sandwich. “It’s not like they are housing the Ark of the Covenant in the school. Why on Earth would they have lasers in the hallways?” A blob of mayo landed on my t-shirt, so I scooped it up with my pinky and licked it clean.
You see that is the thing that you have got to learn about Brady, not only is he the first one in a group to start worrying given any given situation, he also believes everything that he has ever seen on television or in a movie.
“I’m not dumb, Peter. I know that the Ark of the Covenant isn’t in our school; it’s in a warehouse. Not only that, it would be far too dangerous. I mean can you imagine our entire class with our faces melting off just because Mrs. Anderson opened the wrong door?” Brady said.
I tried as hard as I could to just keep my mouth shut. I’m not lying when I tell you that I don’t think that Brady was kidding. If Steven Spielberg took the time to put it on celluloid, then it’s the gospel according to Brady. To this day, he does not step foot into the water when his family goes to the beach.

About the Book
When Peter Gentry and his family move to a new town, Peter isn’t thrilled to enroll in a private school that is “Shaping Minds and Saving Souls.” He is even more disappointed when his fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Anderson, turns out to be downright evil. When she met his mom, she seemed sweet, but Peter quickly realizes it’s just a mask she wears for parents.
Brady Heath is a new kid, too, so he and Peter become fast friends out of necessity. They soon learn that Mrs. Anderson is just the tip of the iceberg of bad stuff at St. Thomas Christian Academy. In order to be accepted at their new school, among their peers and the faculty, Peter and Brady must spend one endless night locked in the scary old place.
With the lights turned off, St. Thomas is a very spooky place—and things only get spookier as more time passes. Will Peter and Brady survive the shadows and secrets hidden in the dark, and what will be Peter’s testimony? In the spirit of Goonies and Stranger Things, Testimony challenges young Peter to rely on friendship and possibly put his trust in a higher power.
