Rough Country Road
OUCH! Things are very tight at our checkbook address. Very tight! Kevin and I have certainly been squeezed through narrow financial times before. This time, however, the road is so rough that it has potholes. We have been eagerly expecting that “great magnitude” monetary break through for several years, and there is nothing on the horizon. It is jarring, indeed!
All the elements of our life were contradicting promises that the Lord had given us, in a severe way. We actually kept examining ourselves to see what went wrong. Finding no culprits to explain our hardship, we cut back on everything we could, to save. If we plotted our errands even more carefully, we could make a tank of gas go further. If we gave just nice cards to each other and saw a movie on TV for our Anniversary, that would help. There was a lot of sighing from my corner when I had to miss my favorite yearly town wide yard sale. Not enough money for it this year.
It felt mighty hard to think prosperously. But God said to praise Him in ALL circumstances. Long ago I discovered He does not attend pity parties. So I praised Him for being my provider. I knew that the rough spots on our life “road”, ruts and all, are more training to sharpen our perspective regarding Who is the source of our real prosperity. We are not done growing in our faith through difficulties. Real abundance is having enough to pay our expenses, pay God our tithes, and help others. The Lord has never left us, or let us down. When I ponder the whole situation, I know that trusting the Lord for everything is very precious, indeed.

About the Book
The Day before We Became Rich answers the questions that shaped the spiritual struggle facing Deborah Dougherty and Kevin, her husband. For several years, they had asked God the questions on the lips of many other Christians: “When will our prosperity break come? God, when will we be rich?”

About the Author
Deborah Dougherty studied physical sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, and worked as a paraeducator in the local school before retiring after three decades. Her love for the Word led her to become a certified lay preacher and to serve churches across Vermont. She and her husband, Kevin have a blended family with 6 children and 17 grandchildren and became ordained ministers. They host a home fellowship for prayer and worship and coordinate Beautiful Gate House of Prayer.
