It was then I saw, in my mind’s eye, Rahim running, running towards me, in a phantasmagorical display of speed without motion. “Rahim is in this accident” I screamed and went rushing forward. I saw two of his teammates stretched out on the ground with various injuries. A drunk driver had come hurtling round the bend, lost control, and smashed his car into the driver’s side of the car they were in.
“Where is Rahim?” I gasped.
“Still in the car,” one of them said. The words went through me like a knife.
“Oh, my son,” I howled, and went flying over to the car. In the back-seat on the driver’s side I found Rahim, motionless, his arms askew, his head resting precariously against the seat. His lower lip was puffed up, both his eyes were closed, the left one was swollen. From a cut above it, blood trickled down his face, soaking his shirt.
“Rahim,” I cried, catching hold of his hand and squeezing it gently, “please answer me, answer me please!”
I felt cold, very cold.
“My son, my son is dead,” I howled, taking my head in both hands.

About the Author
Dr. Raouf Mama is a Distinguished Professor of English at Eastern Connecticut State University, a writer, and a storyteller of international renown, the only one in the world today who tells in English, French, Yoruba and Fon, folktales from his native Benin. He is the author of five books including Fortune’s Favored Child, (Northwestern University Press, 2014), Why Monkeys Live in Trees (Curbstone Press 2006), winner of the 2008 National Children’s Book Award, Tropical Tales (Barefoot Books, 2001), Pearls of Wisdom (Pro Lingua Associates, 2000) and Why Goats Smell Bad and Other Stories from Benin (Shoestring Press, 1998).
