Victory despite the Haters
Jacob had twelve sons, and his son Joseph was hated by most of his brothers because of his dreams of future greatness and his status as dad’s favorite son (37:3, 23, 32). Joseph
• was thrown into a pit (37:24; see Psalms 40:2, 69:14),
• was sold into slavery (37:28; see Colossians 3:11; Micah 6:8),
• was cast into prison over a lie (39:1–19; Psalm 119:78),
• was forgotten by a friend who promised to “have his back” (40:9–15, 22; see Proverbs 18:24),
• eventually came out on top (41:41; see Genesis 37:24; Psalm 40:2),
• believed God had him providentially right where he wanted him, enabling him to be positive and grateful (50:19; see Hebrews 13:15),
• believed God had everything surrounding his life—the good and the bad—orchestrated to turn out for his good (50:20–21; see Genesis 45:7; Romans 8:28), and
• like Jesus, demonstrated the spirit of forgiveness especially to those who had done him so wrong (50:15–21; see Luke 23:34, 6:37).

About the Author
Bishop Cleven L. Jones, Sr. is the pastor of First United Church of Jesus Christ in Detroit Michigan. He received his BA from Morgan State University, Baltimore MD in 1973, and MDiv from Howard University Divinity School in 1976. He is a retired Army Chaplain in 1996 (LTC) and retired social worker (2011). He authored his first book in October of 2010, entitled Genesis and Life. He is the General Secretary to the Board of Bishops of the United Church of Jesus Christ. He is married to Julia Eddington in June 1972. They have three children, Cleven, Jr., married to Senora Clinton, Desiree, and Jewel, and two grandchildren, Abriya and Cleven III.
