And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). My husband asked me to ponder a question today. The question was, “Why do you fear God?” I have a one-word answer: “hell”. No one wants to talk about hell. In fact, the word has been stricken even from the lips of preachers. However, how can we talk about heaven, love, humility, or courage, if we cannot talk about hell, hatred, pride, or fear? If we do not cultivate a healthy fear of the One who can send us to hell, what purpose do we ultimately have for our gratitude to Christ for receiving us into heaven? Jesus humbled Himself, living the life of an earthling amidst the sully and despair of sinful humanity for one purpose, and one purpose only: to save us from hell. Without His sacrifice, you and I would be destined to live out our worst nightmares without the ability to ever wake up. Does that scare you? I fear Him who can deliver my soul to the depths of hell – and I love Him who is preserving my soul for the eternity of heaven. Having a fear of the Lord does not in itself keep us from hell: his salvation is near them that fear him (Psalm 85:9b LXX, emphasis mine). We know that the demons fear him, but they are condemned (James 2:19). The fear of God precedes and inspires salvation. It is the beginning of wisdom, it motivates us to resist evil (Proverbs 3:7 LXX), it inspires obedience, and it directs us in the ways of the Lord. It blesses us. How abundant is the multitude of thy goodness, O Lord, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee! (Psalm 31:19a LXX). The Lord is the strength of them that fear Him (Psalm 25:14a LXX), His eyes are on them that fear Him (Psalm33:18 LXX), and the word of salvation is sent to them that fear Him (Acts 13:26). The most liberating and joy-inspiring fact about our fear of God is this – it gives us courage. King David writes: the workers of iniquity… have not called upon God. There were they greatly afraid, where there was no fear (Psalm 53:4b LXX). Where there is no fear of God, there is every reason to be afraid of the rudiments of the world. We fear God because we know that He is able to deliver or destroy the souls of us all. We know that He is an all-powerful, just, and holy God who will avenge all disobedience. By logically, emotionally, and fearfully placing our trust in Him, He becomes our Father, and here we are, on the playground of life, telling every bully around that our Dad is the toughest Dad in the universe. And so He is. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8:15).

About the Author
Paige Coleman earned an MA in Anthropology before surrendering her life to Christ in 2003. With the help of her believing husband who led her to the Lord, she abandoned the theory of evolution to pursue the God-given, timeless and Biblical truth. Since then, she has earned her Bachelor of Christian Education, taught Grade Six, and written over 100 articles to help women live a godly life. As a follower of Christ, she reverences her husband and homeschools her sons in the Lord. It is her mission in life to labour for the “meat which endureth” (John 6:27). She has never been so blessed.
