Matthew 24 gives us the most concise “big picture” in all of Scripture of the major end-time events and their sequence. It gives us a clear, high-level overview, with all the major events in the proper order.
There are many other good reasons to start here. … Along with passages in Mark 13 and Luke 21, it gives us some very precise—and at the same time, concise—information about the end times. It shows us the biggest single picture of what is going to happen at the end of the age, but it never gets complicated with too much detail. For many of the details that God has allowed us to know in His inspired Word, we go to the other places mentioned.
Many would like to start a study on eschatology with the great book of Revelation. If one does not first consult Matthew’s road map in the Olivet Discourse, he does so at his own peril, because there are many parenthetical statements, flashbacks, and flash-forwards in Revelation. There is also, of course, much symbolic language, as John tries to describe in the language of his day the things he sees—things that have never been seen before. This in no way takes away from the need to use a literal interpretation method, but it also argues that we need to be most careful. It confirms the critical need to follow the road map that the Lord gave us in Matthew 24.
