It rained that Saturday, all day.
I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that my husband and I had just pruned back to almost nothing the bush that blocked the sprinkler head. And nothing to do with the new sprinkler I had bought to give the grass a longer watering than the automated sprinkler was willing to do.
Poor lawn! It's terrible what lack of water will do to a patch of grass.
Our poor parched patch had been deprived of water for at least two summers so you can imagine how it looked. (Yes, we should have figured out the problem much earlier!) Varieties of weeds I had never before encountered moved in. The few tenacious blades of grass that managed to survive in hard dirt had been crying out for help—for life sustaining water.
Our bodies do that, too. If we don’t drink, we become tired and listless and our muscles cramp or feel painful. Dehydration is not pretty and, worse, is dangerous, especially if it takes us a while to identify the problem.
Our souls and spirits need water too, the kind that can only be found in one place. Its lack, however, is not always obvious. Sometimes, everything around us looks good and we are happy with the circumstances of the moment, but if we get quiet we can tell that something is not right. Something is missing. Some spring—maybe the one that brings peace that stays, hope that has reason, and joy that strengthens—has dried up.
At times like that all we need is the soul refreshment that comes from looking at Jesus’ face, and the spirit life that comes from the water of his word.
Today, let’s check our water supply.
"Oh God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longest for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is." (Psalm 63)

About the Author
Fay Rowe grew up on the east coast of Canada, where she attended Memorial University of Newfoundland and earned degrees in education and English. She has taught in both private and public schools in Canada and in College Station, Texas.
As a teacher of fourth-grade and junior-high students, and in settings such as Sunday morning church services, Wednesday night Bible studies, and various women’s club and conference events, Fay Rowe has shared powerful insights with people of all ages. As an author, she encourages her readers’ faith while challenging them to walk ever closer to Jesus. Her second book, Keepers of the Testimony, won a TWG (The Word Guild) Award (Relationships Category) in 2009.
Fay has a grown daughter, Gillian, and is mother-in-law to Ryan. She and her husband, Glenn, live in Ontario, Canada, where she is working on her first novel and producing a weekly podcast.
