What About Sex?

After he was saved, my grandfather spent the last half of his life pastoring small country churches, mostly in Northeast Mississippi. I spent a lot of time with him as a young teenager and he was always preaching to me in a kind of conversational way. Often our conversation would turn toward girls and sex. I remember him saying one time, “Son, if a man ain’t getting it at home, he will likely be getting it somewhere.” I realize that statement is kind of crude and direct, but it has a measure of truth in it. God created us to be sexual beings, and when He initiated marriage way back in the Garden of Eden, God encouraged Adam and Eve to be sexual. In Genesis 2:28 he told them, “Be fruitful, and multiply.” God designed and encourages us to desire sexual activity. Consequently, we do! Moreover, like my grandfather said in his own way, most of us will find a way to fulfill our sexual desires even if it is in a sinful way. Since this is the case, we had better get our minds around God’s idea of what human sexuality ought to be. We must do this because a poor sexual relationship in marriage is often a marriage killer. So, what does God’s Word say about sexuality and marriage? More specifically, what does the Bible say about how to have a mutually satisfying sexual relationship in marriage?
