“I can’t go forward, and Lord knows, I can’t go backwards. Delivery is so close. I know it is but…
Me: This is taking too long and it hurts sooooo bad. I want to cry but the tears won’t come … at least not on the outside.
God: The sooner you get back in position and stop whining, the smoother this will go.
Me: Position? ... What position? … On my back? … On my face? … On my knees?
God: No, it’s not a physical position. It is a position of the heart. It is a surrendered heart. It is a position where you are constantly listening for my instruction. It is a position of obedience.
Me: Obey what? I can’t even seem to hear you consistently these days.
God: I have spoken but you have been distracted. Sit down. Close your eyes and breathe. Slow, deep cleansing breaths. Breathe in my presence and you will breathe in my peace. You will then be able to relax while I stretch you a bit more.
Me: Hold on … wait a minute…while you stretch me a little bit more? Lord, I feel like I’ve been stretched to the limit already. There is no more elasticity left in me … are you trying to kill me? I can’t take it anymore. I really have had enough. I can’t handle any more stretching.
God: My grace is sufficient for you. Ask for my help. You don’t have to do this in your own strength.
Being still was hard for me during this journey only because of my stubbornness. Although God had spoken to me already about how this was going to play out and what I needed to do, I wanted to do it my way. I wanted to keep ‘doing’ instead of quieting myself and ‘being”. Life is so much better His way, even the not so good stuff.

Bernice Gorham Cherry is a compassionate educator, engaging writer, and dynamic speaker. She is passionate about seeing people set free from bondages that keep them from being all that God has called them to be and to do.
This is her second book. Her first, “The Onion You Are Eating Is Someone Else’s Water Lily” was published in 2004.
She and her husband, Steve, reside in North Carolina. They have three adult children.
