“Have you considered my servant Job?” The opening salvo came from the Great Judge, in Job 1:8, throwing down the gauntlet before Satan. The curtain lifts on the heavenly scene giving humanity an extraordinary glimpse into God’s Throne Room.
“Does Job fear God for no reason?” came the reply from the epitome of impertinence. The ultimate prosecutor argued that he only lived for God because God was so good to him. In other words, “pull out the rug and it all falls apart.”
Thus begins the tome, unique in that it journals the interplay between everyday life on earth and the spiritual warfare behind it. Job lost it all, his children, his livelihood, his health, basically everything he cared about. As readers, we zoom out and see Satan, the great destroyer, behind it all. Job never knew why he met with such disaster. He had no way of knowing that God was holding him out as an example of faith and blamelessness. He didn’t have any idea what was going on, but he put his trust in God.
The gavel came down ruling for the defendant. The prosecutor unceremoniously exited the courtroom. God was glorified once again.
Life goes on. Heartaches remain. Scars act as lifetime reminders of injury. Pain is a merciless slave driver. The ultimate challenge is to trust in God. Like Job, we will never know what is going on in the spiritual world, behind the scenes. Rest assured though, we are on a battlefield. We will never see the other side while we are consuming oxygen, but the ravaging of satanic attacks can often be seen in retrospect. Not everything perceived as negative in this life is a satanic attack. In reality, there is no way of knowing. All we can do is look at parallels in scripture, in these pages I hope to show some of that. I don’t pretend to see beyond the material world, these are just some of my observations on life and Scripture. The most important thing we can do is be ready.
Jesus said in John 10:10:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
Therein lie the players, the thief and the Savior.
Abundant life is joy overcoming sorrow, peace in the storm and knowing it will be worth the fight when we ultimately get to look into the Savior’s face and hear Him say, “Well done…”

Victory is available in Christ alone. Satan does his best to blind us to this truth, using all his tactics and deceptions to build his strongholds of sin. The time is now join Christ in the fight, so grab your sword and join the battle.

P. David Christensen graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in pastoral training and Greek. He and his wife of thirty-six years have raised and homeschooled their three daughters in southeast Wisconsin, where they currently reside.
