After the previous chapter on death and dying, it only seems reasonable to lighten thinks up a bit and provide a few laughs through some good old fashioned humor. Although the upcoming oldies but goodies have probably been read or heard many times before, they still have the ability to make us laugh. And since this is the last chapter, it is always best to leave people laughing, a reference to the title of the old comedy-drama, Always Leave Them Laughing.
My colleagues, Doctors Diet, Quiet, and Merryman prescribe the best medicines, and the medicine prescribed by Dr. Merryman is humor. Dr. Merryman says humor promotes a merry heart, a cheerful mind, and a joyful soul. From research dating back to the 1930s, humor, followed by hearty laughter, is thought to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and release brain chemicals like endorphins that elevate mood. Despite what the serious people think, laughing themselves well is a humorous remedy.

Joseph Craig is a physician, medical historian, and the author of Doctor Luke’s Books. He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from The Medical College of Wisconsin. Doctor Craig and his wife live in Houston, Texas.
