About the Author

I often think back when I was six, as some of my favorite and happiest memories. Going out to play was very exciting. I imagined when I would go outside to play, that I might discover all kinds of things. Grasshoppers, ants, caterpillars, bees, and birds. I would always see a neighborhood cat or dog. I would love it after it rained because it smelled so clean, the earth would come to life. I would find a leaf on the ground and put ants on it, making believe it was a boat. And I loved trees. Trees were fascinating to me because everyone was a little different. The best time was in the fall because of all the beautiful colors. In my backyard, I had a favorite tree. I would sometimes talk to it, thinking it might hear me. I was often lonely, and I just wanted to share about all the fun creatures I would find, to someone or something. Even now, those memories would come rushing back, putting me in a happy place. The Autumn Door is just a part of my childhood imaginations. It was fun being six, because it was ok to play pretend, and no one would question your sanity.
