Find Your Own Calcutta

In these most trying and difficult times, we don’t have to look any farther than our own back yard to find those who are in need and calling upon us, many times quietly, for our help and our kindness.

But the fact that they are there is not the where the difficulty lies. We don’t have to search to find those in need. We don’t have to travel across the world to locate those who are suffering and lonely.

In fact we don’t have to drive across town to find them. They are all around us. They are not always part of what we see on television or what we have cemented in our minds as what those in need may look like. The men, women, and children in need are not always impoverished through the lack of material things, but so many of them are suffering with something all the more important - poverty of the heart.

The reality of it all is not that they are not there with us; the reality is that we don’t hear them. We don’t see them. Sometimes we turn our collective heads and pretend not to see and at other times we are so self-absorbed, so tuned in to the distractions that surround us constantly.

So why are we waiting to begin to create a life of service? The longer we think about helping others and beginning or growing in our life of service, there is a good chance that we may never start at all. And every day we delay we are missing so many wonderful opportunities to make a difference in others’ lives and in our own.

You will know when you find your calling when your heart’s greatest desire meets the world’s greatest need.

It may be closer than you think.
