Dear Angela,
Abuse is a mess. It is out of control life clutter. Most of the abuse that I experienced was a control issue. It was behavior to try to overcome fear, anxiety, depression. Manipulation, deceit, control, isolation, name calling, threats, using, abusing were all blatantly selfish. Abusive behavior is devoid of empathy.
Abuse left me in a mess. My heart was broken as I am sure yours is as well. I asked God why? I asked for strength. When Jesus came to us as a baby he came in the midst of our mess. Stables are not very hygienic. Neither are our hearts.
Sometimes my barn, my stable, has been a shabby, smelly shelter for my soul. Only when I let the Lord take me and snuggle me in his arms and protect me from all that would destroy me can I be transformed, be safe, be free, be loving. In the midst of our mess, perhaps especially in our mess we are loved.
Love is a gift wrapped in many ways. Abusers mock love and forgiveness, that is sick and evil; but, God is not mocked. When abuse was so heavy in my life and life was so messy God didn’t leave me. Faith and family and friends rescued me. Grace came. It’s always good to embrace grace.
It was hard to ask for help. I was so mired in the ugly mess. How could I escape?
There can be no room for grudge.
Grace is a gift. Grudge is a trudge. Make grace the pace. God’s time is best.
