Kelly Shannon opened her dark purple eyes and immediately started to shiver from the raw dank musty morning air that filled the long empty stone basement where she had slept the night before.
In earlier times the length of the entire basement was used to store the fish brought in by the old wooden vessels that tied up at Commercial Wharf.
Kelly laid there shaking and smelling the low tide with its distinct fishy brine aromas she had learned to appreciate. She slept on an old mattress covered by filthy ragtag blankets. Her old leather handbag that carried all her earthly possessions was used as a pillow.
Kelly never slept in the same place two nights in a row ever since the first assassination attempt on her life.
