As I was driving out of town this morning to hear my friend preach, I saw this road on my right—“Shortcut Road.” I had passed many other roads on my drive and never even cast a glance at their names until I came to this one. I knew where I was headed, and I knew the way there … but even still … Shortcut Road drew my attention. I didn’t turn but kept on driving. Then I began thinking, What if I had taken Shortcut Road? What would have happened? I may have been late to my destination; I may have met tragedy down that road; or at the end of the shortcut, I could have found myself lost! Isn’t that what happens to us spiritually sometimes? We are on the path that God has led us to. Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path.” We know where we are going—heaven.
John 14:2–3 says, “I go to prepare a place for you … that where I am, you may be also.” We know how to get there—following Jesus and keeping His commandments. John 8:12 says, “Then spake Jesus again unto them saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Revelation 22:14 says, “Blessed are they that do His commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”
Sometimes while we are on our way, Satan shows us an alternate route that entices us and he labels it “Shortcut Road.” He paints pretty scenes down Shortcut Road and suggests that we will be fine to take it. But what he doesn’t tell you is that taking that trip down Shortcut Road may make you late for your destination (you may miss out on something God wants to bless you with). You may even find yourself in the middle of a tragedy that Satan had planned to trap you. At the end of that road, you may find that you are completely lost. The good news is that God will be waiting right there for us to ask for His help to get back on the narrow road. God allows U-turns … called repentance! I am so glad of that (2 Peter 3:9)! And God will guide us back to the place where we decided to take Shortcut Road … and it is that place we will find true peace, joy unspeakable, and love unfailing. Psalm 16:11 says, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is fullness of joy, at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
This morning if I had taken Shortcut Road and found myself lost, I could have gotten out my GPS and entered the church address, and I would have been given directions to my destination. Today, my friend, if you find yourself lost at the end of Shortcut Road, take out your GPS (the Bible) and you will find directions to get you back on the right track.
Jesus saith unto him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

“Reflections of God’s Grace” is a collection of devotional messages that have simple, yet profound illustrations for Godly living. They are reminders for many of us of what we have learned through sermons, songs and Scripture. Each devotion has a group of scriptures to support the message because God’s Word is most important. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” These devotions will challenge you to examine your heart and your walk with the Lord, and help you become a brighter “Reflection of God’s Grace”.
About the Author
Michelle Hanna, a long-time resident of Georgia, grew up on a church pew, singing hymns and listening to her grandfather, and later her uncle, preach the Word of God. After graduating college, she began her career as a computer programmer, never dreaming of writing a book. Throughout her life, she served in many capacities in her local church and for 12 years sang in a local, Southern Gospel trio. Beginning in January 2015, she felt a new calling on her life – to encourage people through devotional messages that are tied directly back to Scripture. God has been faithful to speak to her, giving her the messages and the words to convey those messages. Her heart’s desire is to serve God fervently, to always have tender ears to hear His voice, and to answer any calling He places on her life – even if it is something she never dreamed of doing.
