All who had witnessed this scene were dumbstruck. Nobody said anything or even moved for a few moments. Finally, I began to recover my composure and looked in the direction the man had walked. The landscape was mostly barren—except for a few trees along the river—and flat, save for some large rock outcroppings, a few quite high, in the distance. I then caught a glimpse of the man. I was sure it was he because of the color of his tunic, dark brown. I cannot explain what I did next: I began to pursue him. I was a strong lad, and I started running, soon beginning to gain on him. My heart was pounding, my legs burning and aching. Just at that moment, he turned to the right and walked behind one of the large rock outcroppings, passing out of my sight. I ran faster, confident of catching up to him. As I rounded the large rock, I expected him to be only a few yards ahead of me. However, he was nowhere in sight, which seemed impossible, as there was no place for him to conceal himself from me, if that had been his purpose. My eyes panned up the large rock. Could he have climbed it? No, that was impossible; it was nearly vertical, and no one could scale it. I looked for him for over an hour, without success. Disappointed, I turned in the direction of home. I had just enough time to reach there before dark.

About the Author
In 1986, Garrett Whitworth conceived of writing a historical novel about the life of a man who, arguably, changed the course of world history more than any other man or woman who has ever lived. This book is the result of his years of research. Mr. Whitworth lives in Southern California with his wife, Colleen. They have three children and four grandchildren.
