Deirdre Tolhurst is a published poet and children’s book author, e-book author, speaker, and blogger. She is published in The Golden Treasury of Great Poems (1989) and is the author of A Christmas I Remember (2011). She is also a member of the Texas Association of Authors. Fathers will enjoy this journal of a sort as both parents read the daily passages, until their baby, who hears their words, enters the world already knowing love of God and parents.

Every woman faces pregnancy with multiple emotions?happiness, love, trepidation and fear of the unknown. Author of children?s books and poems, Deirdre Tolhurst writes ?a labor of love?, pun intended, and structures it with interactive ?read aloud? passages and messages to the child growing in the womb; adding prayers and blank lines for the parents and grandparents to add their own thoughts. The pregnancy becomes shared by mother, father and child (children), forming a deep initial bond.

"Having had been a teen mom myself, and going through a crisis pregnancy, I connected right off the bat with why this book was written. It had to do with the writer's daughter, I have walked in similar shoes, but not exact. One of the differences is that abortion had never entered into the mind of the writer's daughter or her family; however, I did have an appointment scheduled at an abortion mill. You know, it is one thing to have an expected pregnancy, where the situation is deemed as good, but what happens when the circumstances are not so good? There is more involved with crisis pregnancies, whatever the reasoning may be. In my case, I had been raped at thirteen years of age, and this core hurt of rape, led to countless dysfunctions in my life: drug use, alcohol, multiple sexual partners, and so forth. I had a crisis pregnancy (in which I did not know who my baby's father was), but I did go through the pregnancy, and so thankful I did, my son is amazing. I could not imagine my life without him. If you are currently walking through a crisis pregnancy, the same is with your child that you are carrying; he / she is already precious, just how God created! If I would have gone through with that abortion that I had already scheduled, I still would be in agony today over that loss, having never met my child, and would have carried all of the what ifs (how tall would my child have been, what color eyes / hair, when would the birthday have been, etc.). If you have had an abortion in the past, yes, there is complete healing through Jesus!

Going back to that time when I was in crisis mode, and picking up this book, having read this book, it would have spoken volumes to me! Because this book is life giving. For a woman who is going through a crisis pregnancy, much of the world around her is pulling at her, telling her that it is too hard. Dear Child of Mine is an extraordinary devotional! I bought it even before I knew I was pregnant. It was important for my husband, Kevin, and I to pray for our baby even before he was conceived. This devotional gave us specific prayers to pray. If you're planning on having kids or know someone who is trying, don't wait until they know they are pregnant, buy this devotional ahead of time! The baby develops so quickly that you will want to start praying right away. Dear Child of Mine helped me to be specific in my prayers each and every day over the individual developments that were taking place. I love how there is a prayer for my baby, that I can speak to my baby. There is also a prayer of thanksgiving and praise to God for this miracle of life. Deirdre includes a scripture, and an area to record your thoughts every day. I have never been one to write in a diary or journal, so I didn't think I would use this space. However, I surprised myself as the weeks went by at how much I actually wrote in the devotional. I wrote about the little things, like what we did on the holidays and how our doctor appointments went. It will be really fun to go back and read these later in life and to give to my child when he gets older. I even taped the ultrasound pictures in the devotional! I wish I had Dear Child of Mine with my first child. If we were having any more children, I would definitely get this devotional again. I highly recommend it for all moms and dads.
