David was improvising. He initially planned on escorting her and her baby to her vehicle so she could leave safely, but he had not planned on her being so dumbfounded by the car seat. Without thinking any further of her feelings but of her safety, he nudged her over, and he safely secured the infant in his seat.
"Get in the car!" He demanded.
Before she could take a step, she nervously dropped her keys. David huffed audibly then picked up her keys and thrust her into the car. She nearly sat upon the baby and had the door slammed behind her. David rounded the vehicle and got into the driver seat himself, started the car, and left the dangerous crowd behind.
"What do you think you're doing?" Elisabeth shouted. She hovered over Tristan in the back seat and refused to be seated.
"Keeping you safe," he replied gruffly as he sped away from McClure's.
"By kidnapping me?"
He had not thought of how difficult it would be for her to accept his heroism from her perspective.
"I'm not kidnapping you," he rolled his eyes. "I'm rescuing you."
"From what? Strange men? YOU are a strange man!" Elisabeth alternated concerning glances over her shoulder to the danger she left behind her and back to the driver and the danger she currently faced.
David let out a sigh. Women. "What are you doing in this terrible neighborhood at this hour?"
"Well, dad, I didn't know I wasn't allowed here past my curfew."
"Hilarious. Don't you know it's not safe to be here with your child? You made yourself an easy target."
"For you?" Elisabeth was exasperated.
"I'M HELPING YOU!"
"Oh, is that why you shoved me in my car and stole my keys? What do you want from me?"
In his experience with women, they were all this way - misconstruing everything you try to do. I rescue her from an angry mob, and she thinks I'm kidnapping her. I should have left her in her own problems. "Right now, what I want from you, is for you to buckle up and shut up! They're chasing us."
