In one format or another, the following parable merits frequent consideration.
A religious man stood on the roof of his house during a terrible flood. He prayed to the Lord for salvation. The waters were rising. Soon they would reach the roof of the house where he stood.
“Spare me, Lord,” he pleaded fervently. “I have been a righteous man, and will continue to serve You well.”
Soon a speedboat came by the roof. “Get in,” shouted the captain of the speedboat.
But the righteous man responded loudly, “Save my neighbors on the roof of that house over there. The Lord will save me.”
The waters were still slowly rising. Now the righteous man’s feet were covered with a layer of water.
Shortly, another vessel approached. “Get aboard,” the skipper commanded.
“No. Rescue that family over there,” the righteous man responded. “The Lord will save me.”
Now the floodwaters rose over the shoulders of the righteous man. As he struggled, he spotted yet another family on a distant rooftop. They were about to succumb to the flood. When the next rescue vessel arrived, the righteous man directed that vessel to save them. “The Lord will save me,” he said.
Finally, the floodwaters engulfed the righteous man, and he was taken to his eternal reward.
The spirit of the righteous man was awarded an audience with the Lord. “I was righteous and faithful my entire life. How could You let me perish in the flood?”
The Lord responded, “Who let you drown? I sent three boats to rescue you!”

Kurland, MD, is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Life Fellow of the Pan American Medical Association, and Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. He served as LCDR, US Navy Medical Corps, and as chief of service, Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, Veterans Administration Research Hospital, Chicago. He also served as associate professor of neurology and associate professor of psychiatry at Northwestern University Medical School. He was a founding member of the board of directors of the Institute for Advancement of Prosthetics, and a director of the Barr Foundation. Dr. Kurland has received perennial recognition as one of America’s Top Psychiatrists by the Consumers Research Council of America. Dr. Kurland was selected as a charter member of Peer-Reviewed Physicians. He was also selected as a top doctor in the Global Directory of Who’s Who.
